Cyclists can experience the fascinating geology of the Jinshan Hot Spring area on the North Coast along the Fengzhimen and Jinshan-Wanli bikeways, or follow a former rail line through the Old Caoling Tunnel along the Longmen-Yanliao and Old Caoling bikeways. Riders on the Yuetan and Xiangshan bikeways
can enjoy the scenic beauty of Sun Moon Lake, while the natural and cultural charms of the Tri-Mountain area await along the Emei Lake Bike Path and Ershui Bikeway. This guide also introduces the Wushantou Hatta and Baihe bikeways in the Siraya National Scenic Area, the Aogu Wetlands and Beimen bikeways on the Southwest Coast, and the Round-the-Bay Bikeway at Dapeng Bay. Indigenous culture is among the attractions along the Anpo Tourist Cycle Path in Maolin and the Shimen-Changbin Bikeway, Sanxiantai Bike Route, and Taiyuan Valley Bikeway on the East Coast. Visitors can also explore the East Rift Valley via an extensive cycling route network formed by the Ruisui Bicycle Path, Dapo Pond Bikeway in Chishang, Yuli
Bikeway, Liyutan Bikeway, Guanshan Town Encircling Bicycle Path, and Longtian Bike Path, or experience the offshore-island charms of Penghu along the Magong City and Huxi bikeways.

Plan a Three (3) Days of Cycling Tour in Northern Taiwan

Some visitors may only have couple days to visit Taiwan on their trip for any reasons. It could be a short break during their conference or exhibition trip in Taiwan. Or it could be that they only stop over in Taiwan because their final destination is Japan or South Korea. But no matter what reason it may be, they still want to get the best experience out of they short stay in Taiwan. Then we would surely recommend to take one day to enjoy the rides along the riverside parks and the bike ways built along the main rivers.

If you have a bit more time, then you can arrange couple more days and a bit more into the east to get experience both into the mountains and the Pacific ocean.

We plan a simple route for three days to ride the northern part of Taiwan, which will cover Taipei city (台北市), New Taipei city (新北市), Yilan county (宜蘭縣), and Keelung city (基隆市).

Taipei and New Taipei City Riverside Park bikeways

Taipei and New Taipei City Riverside Park bikeways

This route starts from Taipei riverside park and enter the mountain from Xindian (新店) to Pinglin (坪林) and exit to Jiaosi (礁溪) where you can relax and immerse yourself into a well relaxed hot spring after an exhausting day of long bike ride.

The second day riding plan will start from Jiaosi and directly head to east and reach the coastline where you will have the Pacific ocean on your ride all the time during your ride. Today will be less climbing comparing to the previous day, so simply relax and take as much time as possible to take photos and taste the local foods. At night you should visit one of the most famous night market in Northern Taiwan - Keelung Miaoko (廟口), literally means market in front of temple.

Enjoy your time deep in the mountains

Third day you can either ride along the coastline all the way back to Danshui (淡水) or either travel as we suggested here to pass and visit one of the National Park in Taiwan called Yangminshan (陽明山) since you would not have chance to visit the most famous Taroko (太魯閣) that is located in the East Taiwan. Yangminshan is still a live volcano but really no need to worry since it has been quietly sleeping for a long time now and no signs of being active again any time soon. However, due to the volcanic characteristics, the scenes along the way would really pay off for all the climbing efforts.

As we firmly believe, there are always places to enjoy your biking experience in Taiwan. Just plan a little bit in advance and do not worry of getting lost in Taiwan since there are always people willing to help any visitors to have their best memory in Taiwan. Hop on and have a great time in Biking Taiwan and wish to see you back in this wonderful place again soon!

Arrange your five (5) days bike tour in Taiwan

We often received inquiries about how to plan a bicycle trip in Taiwan. Therefore, I plan to make suggestions/templates for those who are interested in visiting Taiwan by bike, but do not intend to hire a bike guide to accompany them for whatever reason they may have.

All trip planning starts from some basic questions as follows,

  • how many days are planned the trip
  • how many people are in the group
    • what is the level of cycling experience of each individual
    • where would you start the trip
    • when would you start this tour
    • how do you plan to have the bike
    • how do you transport your luggages
    • what types of accommodations would you need
    • what sort of scenes are more attractive to you, i.e. food, culture, nature, sea, mountain, and etc.
    • LAST but NEVER LEAST, what is your budget

In fact, there are many questions to be answered and everyone should have her/his own answers. Therefore, the following information sharing is based on my own assumptions and own experiences, so no critics are necessary. Take it if it suits you, and simply click away if it appears to be junk to you. ^_^

An example of five days trip by bicycle in Taiwan, and you want to experience the best and most of Taiwan. This trip starts from Hualien and goes along the rift valley part of eastern Taiwan and then cross the Coastal Mountain to east coast side of Taitung before entering the Southern cross island route to ShouKa and strolling down to the Southern Peninsula of  HengChun and Kenting.

There are two types of maps attached that we have used most often in our own planning.

First one is the Bikemap, which can really show you the routes in details distance and also the elevations so you would not under estimate the daily ride by imaging that all the routes in this small island should be flat.

Second one is the Google Map where you can find the suggested start and end points for each day and of course the place that might be interested to stop and take photos while resting and regain your energy.

Biking Taiwan five days trip plan - Hualien, Taitung, Pingtung

A bicycle trip from Chihshang (池上) to Taitung City (台東市)

Taitung part of east rift valley are full of rice fields that grow high quality of rice we eat everyday here in Taiwan. Therefore, you should  spend more time strolling around the small roads in between the rice fields and to enjoy different views in different time of the year.

Luye is now famous to its summer hot-air balloons festival, but there are also paragliding if you are looking for more adventurous type of activities.  If you are more comfortable simply riding bicycles under the green tunnels, Luye has the right place for you as well since the whole town was well planned out and many trees were planted during the time of urban planning.

Taitung city itself has several bicycle only routes that you can connect from one place to the other. So before you head on for the delicious foods in the city, do not forget to ride your bike in one of those bike paths or visit the Forest Park.

Cycling tour from Ruisui (瑞穗) to Chihshang (池上)

This could be the best part of cycling through east rift valley in Taiwan.

A lot of cyclists or bikers in Taiwan call route 193 the most beautiful route to bike in east coast since all the villages that it passes are not so well developed and have kept the origin of its natural beautifies. On this route, you may not find any amazing buildings or fancy parks made for tourists, but you can experience the peaceful and beautiful side of Taiwan.

After coming our from route 193, the ride continues to a bike-only cycling path that allow you stand on top of the Euroasia Plate and the Philippines Sea Plate at the same time. Enjoy your time strolling slowing and taking as many photos as you want to. A good spot for the great IG photos.

End this wonderful bike trip in Chihshang which is famous for its tasty bento (lunch box) and vast green rice fields where no electric poles are passing through.

Bike ride from Liyutan (鯉魚潭) to Ruisui (瑞穗)

If you stay overnight near Liyutan, make sure you wake up early and stroll around the lake with your bicycle. It is very refreshing and by chance you might get to see beautiful sunrise from the east coastline.

After breakfast, you can start this day by visiting Chihnan Forest Park and ride down hills to connect onto Taiwan Cycling Route number one, which was the main cycling route that has been promoted by the government in the past few years.  This route has a separated bike path so you do not have to compete with the scooters, cars, and trucks for the main road. The advantage of riding along east rift valley side is that all signs are clearly marked so you will not get lost, and of course this route is quite flat comparing to the route that ride along the coastline.

First attractions in today's ride will be Fenglin Township, certified by Cittaslow International Organization as a good place to live slowly and peacefully. The other attractions include Mataian aboriginal tribe and wetland, Lintianshan forest, and Ruisui hotsprings for your good rest after a long day cycling trip.

Biking in Hualien City (花蓮市) and Liyutan (鯉魚潭)

Since for most people visiting HuaTung will come from Taipei or Yilan by train to Hualien first, there won't be a lot of time left after arriving at Hualien train station. Therefore, we recommend to take a short tour of Hualien city along the coastline bike paths and then head to the mountain to spend for the night at Liyutan. <*If you do arrive earlier, make sure you could ride also to Qixingtan.>

This route is ideal for a 3-4 hours ride, and the only hilly part is the last 5 km of the ride.

Cycling around Sun Moon Lake, CNN Travel named Best Bike Route in the world

Located in the heart of Taiwan, the Sun Moon Lake has long been charming curious foreigners and local visitors alike. Its calm, turquoise water has also inspired many ancient Chinese poets and painters. The route around the largest lake in Taiwan is a three-hour ride, where visitors can enjoy lake scenery, experience Thao aboriginal culture and learn about the local ecology in the Nantou County. If you arrive in early spring, you can even catch the cherry blossoms near this mirror-like lake.

Cheery Blossoms in Sun Moon Lake, Spring only!!

Sun Moon Lake is the largest and most beautiful alpine lake in Taiwan. Its beauty is like a strand of bright pearls shimmering in the midst of Taiwan. The mist-laden water and the constant changes of thick and dispersing clouds and fog create a mood of a fantasy fairyland. Depending on the seasons and time of day, perhaps the scenes might remind you of a sketch, a colorful watercolor painting, or a Chinese landscape painting. Visitors are often enthralled by the refreshingly beautiful and elegant landscapes here.

The beauty of Sun Moon Lake, from dawn to dusk and from season to season, exudes an aura of enchantment regardless of whether it is bathed in sunlight and blue sky or shrouded in mist. Consequently, tourists find themselves in the amazement of stunning landscape accompanied by the chirping sounds of birds and the delightful fragrance of flowers.

In the early morning, a thin veil of mist creating a sense of hazy dreaminess covers the surface of the lake. When the sun rises over the mountains, the obscuring mist lifts slowly to reveal the contour of the lake, reflecting images of surrounding mountains as birds chirp and glide gracefully. At dusk, the colors of the setting sun are like a sprinkling of golden dust, transforming it into a romantic paradise. As the night falls, the flickering lights of fishing boats, shining stars and dancing fireflies reflect their shimmer on the rippling lake as cool evening breezes waft in. Such an image has been described as a mischievous fairy illuminating the lake with her lantern.
