Old railway, New bike path
The Taichung City Government Department of Transportation in order to encourage citizens to use bikes as short-distance transit vehicles, launched the Program of the “Establishment, Operation and Management of the Bike Sharing System”, in the hope that by equipping a urban bike lane network with a bike station service, encouraging citizens to use low-pollution and low-energy-consumption Bike Sharing as short-distance transit vehicles and reducing and replacing personal possession and use of motor vehicles, traffic congestion, environmental pollution and energy loss in the city will be improved.
In the hope of elevating life and culture in the city and in response to a global trend of energy conservation and carbon mitigation, the Taichung City Government, in collaboration with Giant Taiwan, initiated the Taichung City Bike Sharing System Service Plan, using this name "iBike".
iBike uses an electronic unmanned automated management system to provide “ A Leases and B Returns” bike rental service. Government hopes that bikes will be chosen as the last-mile public transit vehicle and more citizens will be glad to use the mass transit system and meanwhile, environmental protection and energy conservation will be achieved and a new commuting culture will emerge.

In 2015, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Ministry of the Interior, local governments, universities, and NGOs all worked together to hold the first official cycling route selection campaign in Taiwan.
Many people may not know Taiwan, but they have heard Giant or Merida if they are into the cycling events or tours. It is simply because of the quality/performace vesus price, both are good choices to make, but what is important is that both brands are made in Taiwan. Bring the biggest competitor in the same industry to each other, they have gradually seperate themselves into two different focus field.
Giant supplies a lot of road bikes which aim for the top speed and light weigh in major competitions.
Merida supplies more models of mountain bikes which are oftenly seen in rough conditions or outdoor activities.
There is a new trend of Taiwan bicycle manufacturers to design beautiful and nice urban city bikes for simply strolling around or daily commute to school or work.
This may have been popular in Europe, but it is only recent years that Taiwanese adopt to this type of biking. Thanks to the well developed biking routes in the city, especially Taipei and New Taipei, stylish new bikes are available in many independent design shops. We reaally love it and that gives more choices other than Giant and Merida. Next time, if you travel to Taiwan, maybe it is interesting to arrange a tour only visiting bike shops and factories.
After a wonderful evening spent in Taipei, we came back to Taichung with local express train which is easier for carrying our foldable bikes along.
Since the weather was only a bit cloudy and no rain, so it might be a good idea to get off the train some stations earlier than Taichung and bike our way back home.
So here we are, get off the train in Houli Station where is the starting point for Houfeng Bikeway.
Houfeng Bikeway is a tiny 4.5km path arose from the innovative conversion of out-of-use railway tunnels. Biking enthusiasts can ride inside the tunnels and take a break by the old trees and farms that sit along the route. (during holidays many people, be aware)
Yes, indeed Houfeng Bikeway is short and not getting us home directly so we need to ride pass Fengyuan and move on to our next destination, Tanyasheng Bikeway.
Tanyasheng Bikeway stretches 12km, connecting Tanzi, Daya and Shengang districts. It is easy to cruise along this route because it's surface is quite flat, except some fly-over bridges.
The total distance is about 30km and passed two wonderful bikeways in Taichung. We arrive home in Xitun, so that counts total of 6 districts in Taichung we have rode in this nice Christmas Day trip.
